This umbrella review looked at 23 meta-analyses and systematic reviews on GLP-1 receptor agonists for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, also called fatty liver disease. The included studies focused on patients with this condition and examined effects on liver health, enzymes, body measurements, and metabolic markers.
The review found that GLP-1 receptor agonists show potential benefits in improving fatty liver disease across multiple dimensions, with a relatively acceptable safety profile. However, nearly 80% of the included reviews were of critically low quality, and there was high evidence overlap.
Because the findings are preliminary and hypothesis-generating, they do not prove that these drugs cause improvements. The main reason to be careful is that the evidence is not yet strong enough to change medical practice.
Readers should know that high-quality studies are urgently needed. This review suggests a possible role for GLP-1 drugs, but it is not a recommendation for treatment.
