If you've ever dreaded a colonoscopy, here's some good news. A new analysis of 30 clinical trials suggests that a simple switch from air to water during the procedure could make it more comfortable.

The study found that using water infusion instead of air or CO2 did not change how well doctors detected polyps. But it did reduce the need for on-demand sedation by nearly 40% and the need for abdominal compression by 35%. That means fewer people needed extra medication or manual pressure to complete the exam.

The analysis included over 30 randomized trials, making it one of the most comprehensive looks at this technique. However, the results are based on pooled data, and individual experiences may vary. Also, the review did not report on side effects or how well patients tolerated the procedure.

Still, for anyone facing a colonoscopy, this is a promising sign. Water infusion might not be standard everywhere yet, but it's worth asking your doctor about.
